Lot Essay

The portrait could be that of a young Princess Caroline of England (1713-1757), daughter of George II of England and his wife Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach.

The characters of the Commedia dell'arte became very popular with all artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau as well as artisans such as a gold box makers. Commedia dell'arte is an early form of open air theater started in Padua in 1545 and popular throughout Europe until the 18th century. The characters usually represent fixed social types with their own characteristics. Some were recurring figures probably the most popular such as Arlecchino or Harlequin, a poor man suggested by his costume, gluttonous, illiterate and gullible though a skilful acrobat; Pulcinella with his pointy hat and his black mask with long nose and hunchbacked, also a glutton and of varying temperament; finally the happy though naïve Pierrot.
Over the years, Commedia evolved and spread across Europe where each country adapted it to its liking, such as in England where it became Punch and Judy.
