Lot Essay

This micromosaic scene is traditionally known as the Mill or landscape with Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca after a painting by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). Two versions of this painting exist: one believed to have been commissioned by Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphili (1622-1666) in 1646 to commemorate his marriage to Olimpia Aldobrandini (1623-1681) in 1647, held in Palazzo Doria Pamphilj in Rome; the other version is in the National Gallery, London (NG 12). It was painted in 1648 for Frédéric-Maurice, duc de Bouillon and was acquired by the museum in 1824 with its pair Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba.

The scene shows the marriage of Isaac and Rebecca as described in the Old Testament book of Genesis. Although the landscape is imaginary, it is largely inspired by the countryside around Rome where Claude Lorrain spent most of his life.
Lorrain was one of the most famous 17th century painter described by John Constable as "the most perfect landscape painter the world ever saw". His work had a profound influence on landscape painting and remained very popular with the public throughout the 18th and 19th century.
It is probable that Agostino Francesangeli who was part of a group of Vatican mosaicists had access to the painting in the collection of Camilo Pamphili and Olimpia Aldobrandini as both had close connection to the Vatican with the latter a niece of Pope Gregory XV (1554-1623) and the former a nephew of Pope Innocent X (1574-1655).

Another version was sold at Il Ponte Auction House, Milan, 14 November 2018, lot 983, though unlike ours apparently unsigned.
