Jean-François Breton or Lebreton was apprenticed to Etienne Polle at the age of 14, on 29 June 1727. He was registered as master on 7 September 1737, sponsored by Pollet, his address was given as le pont au Change. He continues to appear in the records until 1787 (Nocq Vol 1, page 196).
Many of Jean-François Breton's boxes appear to combine gold with another medium such as hardstone or lacquer, probably a remainder of the sumptuary laws which limited the amount of gold being used for snuff-boxes, forcing goldsmiths to use alternative medium.
Christie's sold in 2016, July 7, lot 212 a snuff-box by Breton dated 1766 decorated with brown agate and set with a miniature of Queen Marie-Antoinette.
