Lot Essay

These grand and impressive candelabra are photographed in the White Drawing Room at Chesterfield House in London where the 6th Earl of Harewood and Mary, Princess Royal lived when in the capital. Along with the other Empire and Empire-style candelabra wall-lights in this sale they are typical of the taste of the Princess and her husband, who remarked in a letter to her mother Queen Mary ''All our Empire lights look so well in the various bedrooms on the mantel pieces. We thought we should have too many, but find we could do with more; however it will be fun to collect these by degrees'.

We are grateful to Rebecca Burton, Curator & Archivist at Harewood House for providing the above letter transcription and archival information.
