The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In overall good condition.
With the inevitable chips, marks and scratches consistent with age and use.
A few chips and losses to the gilding throughout.
Six of the ornamental bells detached but present.
Some minor losses, repairs and sympathetic restoration to the entwining branches and foliage throughout, as to be expected with such delicate and exposed details.
Overall the carving and gilding maintains an impressive appearance.
In good decorative order and ready to place.
Girandole A:
With some of the mossy decorations to the apron broken but still loosely attached
A loss to the giltwood scrolling acanthus mount of the mirror plate.
Girandole B:
With half of the giltwood scrolling acanthus mount of the mirror plate detached but present.
The gilding:
Three samples of gilding were taken from each of the two girandoles: from the fan shape at the base, from a leaf at the side and from the roof at the top.A coat of white chalk gesso was applied in a couple of layers, followed by a layer of glue size and then water gilding using a light brown clay.In a couple of the samples there was evidence of later local repairs. The toning layer seen over the gold may have been applied when these repairs were carried out.The gilding is water gilding, and the materials used for this do not change over time and was found which would prevent the gilding seen today being the original mid-nineteenth-century scheme.
