Lot Essay

Cromek, writing in his Journal on 29 July 1832, 'hence to Subiaco with which I was disappointed -made but one pencil sketch there. July 27, 28, 29 - again to Subiaco, when I changed my opinion of it. I made two or three sketches in the town and one in the Convent of San Benedetto.' Another version of this watercolour was illustrated as plate 3 in the Harewood House exhibition catalogue op,cit., p. 19, which appears to be the same watercolour, dated 1841 that was sold Sotheby's, London, 29 July 1976, lot 207.
