Lot Essay

Thomas Hartley Cromek was born in London, the son of the engraver Robert Hartley Cromek. He left England in 1830 following in the footsteps of many artists wishing to capitalise on the popularity of view of classical sites and lived on the Continent, primarily in Rome, from 1831-1849 though returning to England to sell his work and meet potential patrons.

Cromek was commissioned to paint this subject several times during his career and another version is in the Cleveland Museum of Art dated 1846.
