A PATINATED TERRACOTTA GROUP REPRESENTING EUROPE, SIGNED BY ALFRED AUGUSTE JANNIOT (1889-1969), PROBABLY CIRCA 1955

Alfred-Auguste Janniot studied sculpture at the Beaux-Arts with Jean-Antoine Injalbert and continued his apprenticeship at the Villa Medici. During his stay in Rome, he developed a style combining ancient heritage and modernity and a predilection for mythological subjects, especially those putting the spotlight on the female body. Throughout his career, Janniot explored the theme of the myth of Europe : indeed, he represents it at various moments in the story, using different styles and media. Around 1955, the artist created a model of Europe, lascivious and tender, surrendering herself to a metamorphosed Zeus. Produced in plaster, bronze and terracotta, those examples of Europe reflect the thought and taste of one of the leaders of Art Deco.

Alfred-Auguste Janniot se forme à la sculpture aux Beaux-Arts auprès de Jean-Antoine Injalbert et poursuit son apprentissage lors de son pensionnat à la Villa Médicis. Il tire de ses années romaines un style alliant héritage antique et modernité, ainsi qu’une prédilection pour les sujets mythologiques, mettant notamment les corps féminins à l’honneur. Tout au long de sa carrière, Janniot explore le thème du mythe d’Europe, représentant les divers moments du récit, en exploitant différents styles et médiums. Vers 1955, l’artiste crée le modèle d’une Europe, lascive et tendre, s’abandonnant à Zeus métamorphosé. Édités en plâtre, bronze et terre cuite, les exemplaires d’Europe incarnent la pensée et le goût d’un des chefs de file de la période Art déco.
