Spécialisé dans la production de meubles de style de grande qualité, Maxime Secrétant est à la tête d’un atelier florissant, à la fin du XIXe siècle, situé 74 rue Amelot, à Paris. Il s’associe un temps à son beau-frère Léon Duval, qui avait été ouvrier-ébéniste chez Gervais Durand. Son activité ne résiste pas au contexte économique difficile de l’Entre-deux-guerres et son fonds de commerce est vendu aux enchères à l’Hôtel Drouot, le 26 novembre 1935. Cette commode est réalisée d’après un modèle attribué à Bernard II van Riesen Burgh, conservé au Victoria and Albert museum (inv. 1105-1882). Ce modèle a également inspiré Paul Sormani, qui expose à l’Exposition universelle de Bruxelles en 1910 une commode très similaire. Elle présente toutefois une marqueterie fleurie et non des panneaux de laque (Camille Mestdagh, L'Ameublement d'Art Français 1850-1900, Paris, Editions de l'Amateur, 2010, p. 217, fig. 255).
