This portrait of Gaspar de Crayer (1584-1669), a painter known for his many counter-reformist altarpieces and portraits, is based on an engraving by Paulus Pontius (1603-1658) after a model by Sir Antony van Dyck (1599-1641). The original version of the engraving, published between 1630 and 1645, is in the opposite direction. It was intended for a major undertaking of van Dyck’s, who decided to publish a work containing portraits of the great men of his time. Unfortunately, the artist died before he could complete the project.

Ce portrait de Gaspar de Crayer (1584-1669), peintre connu pour ses nombreux retables de tendance contre-réformiste et ses portraits, est peint d’après la gravure exécutée par Paulus Pontius (1603-1658) d’après le modèle d’Antoine van Dyck (1599-1641).
La version originale de la gravure, publiée entre 1630 et 1645, est dans le sens inverse. Elle fait partie d’un grand projet de van Dyck, qui décide de publier une œuvre qui contient les portraits des grands hommes de son époque. Malheureusement, l’artiste meurt avant qu’il ne puisse terminer son projet.
