FURTHER DETAILS
LUDOLF DE JONGH, PORTRAIT OF A CHILD HOLDING A KESTREL, FULL-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS

Attributed to the Amsterdam painter Jan van Noordt (1623-1681) throughout the 20th century, this idea was rejected by David de Witt, specialist on the artist, for whom it does not display painter's fluid touch, nor the handling of light in the modelling of features and the rendering of drapery that one would expect (D. A. de Witt, 2007, op. cit. supra). When the painting was offered for sale at Sotheby's in 2019 (see supra), it was reattributed to Ludolf de Jongh (1616-1679) by Roland Fleischer, who dates it to circa 1648-1650. Active in Rotterdam, de Jongh was appreciated by the local elite for his genre paintings and portraits. He often collaborated with other painters in his works, notably for the landscape elements, as was probably the case for the present painting.

Although the identity of the young boy depicted is not known, the presence of the kestrel indicates his privileged status in Dutch society, falconry being reserved for the most powerful. The bird of prey also plays a symbolic role: trained, the falcon returns to its master when demanded. The bird's loyalty reflects the young man's continued loyalty to his family as he grows into his own man.
