The inner cover engraved ‘L'Epine à Paris /Horloger de sa Majesté / Madame L'impératrice / Tourner les aiguilles / remonter à droite / No 3937 / Souvenir’, the ivory enamel dial with indication of the days of the week, the date and the months, small second hand, blued steel hands, manual movement, the case back decorated with engine-turned with concentric basket weave motif, engraved in the centre with a shield with monogram ‘N’ under mantle and crown for Napoleon, marked and numbered on both lids: DFB on the bowl and CHL on the lid, later control marks

This watch was made by the famous French watchmaker Jean-Antoine Lépine (1720-1814), associated with Voltaire and who supplied the Bourbons and Napoleon, best known for his invention of a revolutionary movement known as the ‘Lépine calibre’ or ‘calibre à pont’, which enabled thinner movements. Lépine's work had a profound influence on all subsequent watchmaking, notably that of Abraham Louis Breguet, who used a modified version of the ‘calibre à ponts’ for his ultra-thin watches.
This watch, engraved with Napoleon's monogram, was one of the gifts the emperor presented to his close friends and allies.

Cette montre a été réalisés par le célèbre horloger français Jean-Antoine Lépine (1720-1814), associé à Voltaire et qui fournira les Bourbons et Napoléon, surtout connu pour l'invention d'un mouvement révolutionnaire appelée « calibre Lépine » ou « calibre à pont » qui permet la fabrication de mouvements plus fins.
