A NAPOLEON III SILVER WINE COOLER, MARK OF CHARLES-NICOLAS ODIOT, PARIS, CIRCA 1830
On shaped circular spreading base cast and chased with gadroons and foliage repeated on the upper rim, the stem and lower part of the body fluted, the handles in the form of branches with vine leaves terminals, marked underneath: standard for 1819-1838, maker and stamp; on the upper rim: guarantee and stamp

Charles-Nicolas Odiot joined the family business in 1823, registering his mark in 1826. However his father, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot, before retiring from the business, sent him to Garrard's workshops in London for further training.
Charles-Nicolas brought back not only new mechanised manufacturing techniques, but also ornamental motifs that have come to be known as the “English style”. This influence is here recognisable in the large swirling gadroons and heavy foliate terminals typical of the George III style after silversmiths such as Paul Storr.

Lot Essay
