A GOLD AND ENAMEL SNUFF-BOX, PROBABLY GERMANY CIRCA 1800, SIGNED MAGAZIN ROEMPLER A ST PETERSBOURG, 6012 EPREUVE
Ingot shaped chased with horizontal threads, the cover applied in centre with a square plaque enamelled with Thalia, the muse of comedy after a painting by Jean-Marc Nattier dated 1739, engraved on flange with inscription, marked on flange: French mark for foreign objects after 1838

The Roempler name engraved on the flange is associatedwith the famous Bolin jewelry company in St. Petersburg. Andreas Roempler, originally from Saxony, moved to St. Petersburg in 1790, then one of Europe's great metropolises, and quickly established himself as the “Master of Diamonds”, leading to his appointment as jeweler to the Russian imperial court in 1796. After his death in 1829, his son-in-law Gottlieb Ernst Jahn took over the management of the company. The company continued to prosper for a century, eventually opening further boutiques and changing its name after the arrival of Carl Edvard Bolin, who joined the business in 1833.
The painting that inspired the enamel plate is now in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. It has been described as possibly depicting the Duchesse de Chateauroux, but also the Italian actress Sylvia Balletti, due to the presence in the background of Pierrot, Scaramouche and Isabelle, characters from the Italian comedy troupe to which Silvia belonged.
