Ingot shaped, each side chased with sunburst centred by a bouquet of flowers and framed by scrolls and foliage, marked in cover, side and base: charge, date-letter (S) and maker; on the flange: decharge and later control mark

Noel Hardivilliers (fl.1729-1771) is one of the transition gold box maker who started working under sumptuary laws (which limited the amount of gold to be used for the making of a box). Initially he combined various media for his boxes. However once the law had been lifted, he focused on all gold boxes producing some very fine examples. This gold box is a typical example of its period showing the growing interest for botany and the new fashion for gardening.
Apprenticed with Jean Chéret and François-Siméon Barré, he registered his mark in 1729 working on the Pont au Change until he retired in 1771. Hardivilliers was not only a creative maker but also a prolific one buying over 183 kg of gold between 1750 and 1771.

Lot Essay
