Lot Essay

Featuring Linke's signature 'crab' clasp, index number 168 was simultaneously produced both as a centre-table, as here, and as a vitrine-table or bijoutière. Each variation was also available with either chutes 'à fleurs' to the angles, as in the present example, or with chutes 'à caryatides'. An example of a vitrine-table with the former was sold Christie's, New York, 24 April 2002, lot 361, and an example with the latter is visible on Linke's stand at the Paris Salon des Industries du Mobilier in 1902 (see C. Payne, François Linke, 1855-1946 - The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, p. 170, pl. 184). Meanwhile, a centre-table version featuring chutes 'à caryatides' was supplied for the King of Egypt, Fuad I, and is visible in a contemporary photograph of a study at the Ras al-Tin palace (see Payne, op. cit., p. 273, pl. 288 and p. 291, pl. 301).
