Lot Essay

This understated chest-of-drawers bears many of the hallmarks that have been identified as characteristic of the Golden Square firm of William Ince and John Mayhew. The use of ebonised edge-mouldings, laurel wreath ring-handles and more broadly, the fine exotic timbers and quality cabinet-work employed throughout, all point to the firms authorship. For a related bowfront commode also attributed to Ince and Mayhew – probably acquired by either James Montgomery (1720-1803), for Stobo Castle, Peeblesshire, or by George Graham (1730-1801) for Kinross House, Kinross-shire – see that sold Christie’s, London, 17 November 2016, lot 38.
