Lot Essay

The overall form of this wine-cooler relates to a design by Robert Adam for Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn (The Adam Drawings, Sir John Soane Museum, vol. 25, no. 118). A very similar wine-cooler, on cylindrical feet, is visible in the Dining-Room of No. 8 Ely Place, Dublin, photographed for the Irish Georgian Society, 1911, vol. II, pl. CI, which leads to the possibility, that the present lot is of Irish manufacture. A closely related wine-cooler, formerly in the collection of Arthur Stuart, 7th Earl Castle Stewart (1889-1944), was sold Christie's, London, 9 March 2006, lot 247 (£27,600 inc. premium). A further example of this form was sold from the collection of Aso O. Tavitian, Sotheby's, New York, 9 February 2025, lot 1560 ($21,600 inc. premium).
