The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is relined and retains tension on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable although somewhat flattened as a result of the relining treatment. Areas of impasto remain preserved most notably in the white tones of the sitter's cravat and hair. There are some minor scuffs to the paint surface in the lower left quarter. Examination under UV is slightly impaired by the cloudy varnish layer, but reveals some finely applied infilling to the craquelure in the sitter's face and to two thin scratches at left. It reveals some contour strengthening, most notably in the dark tones, and minor scattered retouchings throughout. Overall the painting presents well in an ornate early George III serpented and pierced frame.
