The Temperantia Basin was made circa 1585 by François Briot (c. 1550- 1616), a renowned French metalworker, medallist and model carver. He also served as master of the Mint for the Count Frédéric of Montbéliard. Briot created copper molds used by pewterers to create basin, ewers and medals. The Temperantia Basin, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Acc. no. 2063-1855), is justly considered one of the masterpieces of Mannerist design and inspired copies in silver, bronze, pewter and ceramic.
