拍品专文

Hermes is depicted holding the apple Zeus asked him to deliver to Paris. Eris the goddess of discord upset not to be invited to Peleus and Thetis's wedding threw an apple inscribed 'to the fairest'. This caused a dispute between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite with Hermes having to assist Paris. This event, known as the 'Judgement of Paris' led to each goddess offering Paris a bride. Paris chose Aphrodite and her promise of Helen of Troy's love, which led to the Trojan War.
