Lot Essay

Rare brown-ground Delftwares were inspired by imported Asian lacquer-wares; exotic figures and landscapes were finely depicted in gilt on a deep brown ground on small objets and larger panels arriving from Japan and China. Fashionable housewares from encriers to cabinets could be constructed using this beautiful technique and as such, some Delft manufactories experimented with brown grounds and yellow lines to emulate this desirable material.
