Lot Essay

The clock is based on the drawing entitled La leçon d'astronomie by Jean-André Reiche published in a sales catalogue and dated 1807. The design met with considerable success and it was executed by some of the most influential bronziers of the time, including Claude Galle, whose clock of this model is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich, 1986, p. 374, fig. 5.12.2.
