The clock is based on the drawing entitled La leçon d'astronomie by Jean-André Reiche published in a sales catalogue and dated 1807. The design met with considerable success and it was executed by some of the most influential bronziers of the time, including Claude Galle, whose clock of this model is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich, 1986, p. 374, fig. 5.12.2.

The ormolu with some minor surface scratches, casting flaws, verdigris and rubbing, as to be expected. The enamel to the dial with the typical minute chips around the key-holes, consistent with age, and some restoration to its surface, an apparent clear spray slightly flaking at the XI position. The back plate over the movement lacking, and the bell replaced. Please note: Christie's does not guarantee the working condition of clocks.
