Lot Essay

Henry Hill was a cabinetmaker based in Marlborough, Wiltshire, active from the 1740s until his death in 1778. Over the course of his career, Hill was prolific in the trade—working as a cabinetmaker, decorator, auctioneer, and estate agent. His location in Marlborough, a key stop on the Great West Road between London and the fashionable town of Bath, allowed him to offer more attractive delivery rates to London than his competitors in the capital. Hill’s major clients included Lord Delaval, the 9th Duke of Somerset at Maiden Bradley, Lord Bruce, Marquis of Ailesbury, at Tottenham Park, Paul Methuen at Corsham Court, and Henry Hoare at Stourhead.

The overall design and diaper-pattern veneers on the present pembroke table relates closely to examples probably supplied by Hill to Burderop Park in Wiltshire and to Lord Methuen at Corsham Court (see: L. Wood, 'Furniture for Lord Delaval: Metropolitan and Provincial', Furniture History, 1990, p. 205, figs. 17 & 18).
