A LARGE FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY THRONE CHAIR
AFTER THE MODEL BY FRANCOIS-HONORE-GEORGES JACOB-DESMALTER, LATE 19TH CENTURY
The design for the present imposing chair relates closely to that of the fauteuil du Trône supplied for the sum of 8.900 francs by the celebrated Parisian ébéniste, François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (d. 1841), for the salle du Trône of Napoleon I at the Palais de Saint-Cloud in 1804. Based on designs by Charles Percier (d. 1838) and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine (d. 1853), Jacob-Desmalter's original chair was constructed of gilt walnut with an oval back and with star-studded finials in solid ivory. In the late 19th century, the Empire style was revived by such firms as Maison Antoine Krieger and his contemporaries. Notably, a pair of giltwood throne chairs was supplied to the New York offices of F.W. Woolworth, sold Christie's, New York, 26 October 2000, lot 260.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall in very good condition, decorative and ready to place. With typical scattered light nicks, minor scuffs and faint surface wear, consistent with age and use. The mounts with some light rubbing. Some mounts, including along the edges of the seat, appear to be regilt, others with original gilding. With further scuffs to the reverse of the chair uprights, consistent with use. With a light layer of dirt in crevices. With some minor restoration to the arms where they meet the chair backs; the proper left arm with a small loss just above the arm. With minor patch repairs at joins on the reverse of the chair where the seat meets the back. The upholstery well maintained. Presents well overall.
