Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The case with some minor age and construction cracks as expected; most extensively to the side panels, particularly to the proper left side. Apron later. The surface with a few scattered minor abrasions. The veneer with some slight uneveness and buckling in areas (not extensive). Plugged holes and patches beneath the handles, indicating different previous pulls. The ormolu overall in good condition with some light rubbing, oxidation and minor areas of surface dirt. Certain mounts date to different periods, the ormolu band to the top, the laurel-band to the frieze, the framing mounts to drawers and sides and chandelles are late 18th century and original to the piece. The handles, the drawer frieze mounts and probably the ribbon-tied garlands at the corners are from the Restauration period, circa 1820-40. The sunburst mount is probably late 19th century. English lock, later replaced. The marble top with restored breaks and associated infill, as well as scattered minor abrasions and 'nibbling' to edges. Presents beautifully overall, ready to place.
