The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Scattered age and construction cracks. The ebony with the typical fine craquelure, infill, restorations, some chips and losses. The top with some buckling and heavy rubbing in one area. The brass inlay with scattered losses, breaks, replacements, and some lifting. The central panel applied with a later lacquer finish, now with a craquelure throughout, could benefit from further restoration. The ormolu mounts apparently mercury-gilt with an attractive soft tone, with some minor surface scratches, casting flaws, verdigris and rubbing, as to be expected; the pierced mounts to the sides and the round mount at the lower edge of the central panel probably later added, the proper left rear foot of differing chasing and design, possibly an 18th century replacement, its upper tip separated from the rest of the mount but securely attached. Overall sound condition, will enhance with some later restoration.
