Lot Essay

Jacques-Laurent Cosson, maître in 1765.

With its characteristic lozenge parquetry, this commode belongs to a distinctive group of furniture stamped by or attributed to the ébéniste Jacques-Laurent Cosson, of which several were retailed by the marchand-ébéniste Lonard Boudin, see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIme Siécle, Paris, 1989, p. 92. These include a pair of commodes stamped by Cosson, sold anonymously in Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 8 December 1954, lot 165; another, sold from the collection of Mrs. V.M.J. Wilson in these Rooms, 12 April 1973, lot 72; another, sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 4 November 1989, lot 253; and one sold Christie's, London, 9 December 2012, lot 191. Cosson was established on the rue de Charonne at the sign of the 'Grand Monarque'. In 1786-1787, he furnished more than 3000 livres worth of furniture for the comte de Montmorin for his new hôtel on the rue Plumet built by Brogniart.
