A LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED TULIPWOOD PARQUETRY AND MARQUETRY COMMODE
With its characteristic lozenge parquetry, this commode belongs to a distinctive group of furniture stamped by or attributed to the ébéniste Jacques-Laurent Cosson, of which several were retailed by the marchand-ébéniste Lonard Boudin, see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIme Siécle, Paris, 1989, p. 92. These include a pair of commodes stamped by Cosson, sold anonymously in Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 8 December 1954, lot 165; another, sold from the collection of Mrs. V.M.J. Wilson in these Rooms, 12 April 1973, lot 72; another, sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 4 November 1989, lot 253; and one sold Christie's, London, 9 December 2012, lot 191. Cosson was established on the rue de Charonne at the sign of the 'Grand Monarque'. In 1786-1787, he furnished more than 3000 livres worth of furniture for the comte de Montmorin for his new hôtel on the rue Plumet built by Brogniart.

The marble top, possibly an old replacement, with some restored breaks, abrasions and minor chips. The body with scattered age and construction cracks. The veneers with scattered fraying, lifting, and minor cracks with minor areas of losses and signs of infill and restorations, the Vitruvian scroll framing around the drawers possibly added later. There is some old inactive worm damage to the carcase. Some minor areas of debris accumulation in recessed areas. The chutes, apron mount, pulls and sabots original and re-gilt, the escutcheons and side mounts of later date. Overall attractive shape, lovely marble, ready to place.
