The distinctive form of these chests suggests that they were made for the Danish market, as it corresponds to furniture produced in the region of Altona in around 1770-1780. Given their scale, these chests would have been expensive to ship and even more difficult to execute; such pieces were frequently specific commissions. Related examples are illustrated in A. Kratz, Altonaer Möbel Des Rokoko und Klassizismus, Hamburg, 1988, pp. 210-211, figs. 33 and 34. A closely related Chinese Export commode, also for the Danish market, was sold anonymously at Christie's, New York, 6 June 2013, lot 4 ($127,000).
