The present pair of chairs can be attributed to Clerkenwell cabinetmaker Giles Grendey on a stylistic basis. They relate closely to a more elaborate pair of armchairs formerly at Bulstrode Park, Buckinghamshire, most recently sold Christie's, 13 November 2018, lot 25 (50,000 GBP).

There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. Some shrinkage gaps to the bases of both splats and infilled cracks to figured veneers. Some restoration to joins where crest rail meets the stiles. With signs of old worm. Corner blocks replaced. Minor restorations and replacements to the veneer overall. Chair A with a a well-matched replacement to the top of the scallop, a repaired break to the mid-section of the rear right leg, and the right front leg side ear replaced. Chair B with the left front leg front ear replaced and a minor repair to the front right foot. The needlework upholstery vividly colored with some use wear and minor fading, snags, re-stitching and discoloration as expected. Present well overall, stable and ready to place.
