Lot Essay

It is possible that the present dishes were give to Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle (1748-1825) during his appointment in 1780 on a commission to attempt reconciliation with the American Colonies during the Revolutionary War. As the commission ended up failing in their task, the dishes would have been given back to the Royal inventory upon his return.
