The present lot resembles the ancient Roman sculpture of Mars and Venus from the Baths of Diocletian (Terme di Diocleziano) in Rome. The basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri was built on the remains of the baths in the 16th century and the artwork moved to the Museo Nazionale de Romano.

Overall in sound condition. With natural inclusions, typical light surface wear and minor abrasions. With scattered nicks and 'nibbles', primarily to extreme edges, as to be expected. With a restoration to Venus's head around her neck, appears to be reattached and with associated infilled and plastered over repair, not readily visible in natural light; with some associated small losses to the tendrils on her right side as a result. Mars' helmet with some minor plaster repair, and to the proper right side of his neck, possibly done during restoration to Venus, not readily visible under natural light. With some minor restorations to their clasped hands, particularly to the finger tips. The back of their cloaks with some further minor flat chips and small losses. With some minor surface dirt buildup in crevices.
