拍品專文

One of the most famous majolica models made by Minton, the 'Prometheus' or 'Captive' vase was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867, and again in 1878, where it declared "one of the noblest pieces ever produced". Victor Étienne Simyan (French, 1826-1886) based his model on an engraving of an earlier Italian maiolica form. See P. Atterbury and M. Batkin, The Dictionary of Minton, Suffolk, 1990, p. 168 for a further discussion of this model and an image of the design source, retained at the Minton Museum at the time of publication. The two examples shown at 1867 were acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (accession nos. 1047:1, 2-1871 and 1048:1, 2-1871). Also compare the example dating to 1873 at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (accession no. 48.2935).
