Lot Essay

The Roman 'curule' pattern derives from Breakfast Room chairs illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pls. 7 and 20. A chair of the same design but with solid caned back is illustrated in E.T. Joy, English Furniture 1800-1851, London, 1977, p. 83.
