Lot Essay

Although only offered in his final catalogues, Barye's Ours terrassé par des chiens de grande race, and the similar model, Ours fuyant des chiens, both date circa 1834-8 and relate closely to Chasse à l'ours, one of the five large hunt groups originally commissioned for the celebrated duc Orléans surtout de table. Poletti and Richarme estimate the number of lifetime épreuves for each model to be less than twenty. While the master modèle of this group, created and used by Barye, is kept at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore (inv. 27.156), the fine example presented here, through its construction and provenance, can be identified as the one cast by the collector and dealer Hector Brame for his posthumous editions of this composition.
