Lot Essay

The present lot is modeled after four dishes by Martin-Guillaume Biennais dated 1809-1814 which are now in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (Acc. No. OA 9696). These dishes were part of a larger supper service commissioned by Emperor Napoleon as an official gift to Jean Bernadotte (1763-1844), marshal of France and later King Charles XIV John of Sweden. An identical example was sold at Christie's, New York, 1 November 2023, lot 650.
