Lot Essay

A canapé of this model, possibly the same as the present lot, was sold Sotheby's, New York, 13 December 2003, lot 76.

Martin Delaporte was born to a famous dynasty of cabinetmakers, and established his atelier on the rue des Filles-Dieu-Saint-Sauveur in the 1730s, where he continued to operate until his death in the 1756. He used two stamps: 'M. DELAPORTE' and MDLP, as seen on this canapé. His mark was then adopted by his nephew, Martin Nicolas Delaporte, who himself received his maîtrise in 1765. Recent notable examples include a giltwood fauteuil sold anonymously at Christie's, Paris, 28 November 2019, lot 465 (€15,000), as well as a very similar pair of fauteuils sold by Bernard Steinitz, first at Delvaux, Paris, 29 June 2011, lot 160, and later by Galerie Aveline.
