Lot Essay

This lot is belongs to a set of four commodes, three of which were previously sold at auction: a pair sold Sotheby's, London, 16 December 1998, lot 237 and a single one sold Sotheby's, London, 13 June 2001, lot 385. One commode of the 1998 pair was inscribed 2240 (2), and the 2001 single commode was numbered in black ink 2240. Because the 1998 pair only one has an inventory number and because our lot does not bear one, it is most likely that it was conceived as the pair to the commode sold in 2001. Furthermore, the specimen marble top of the 1998 pair is fitted with a black marble border, whereas the 2001 single commode and ours are framed with white marble. The four commodes reputedly hail from the collection of Count Carl Axel Löwenhielm (1772-1861), who was an illegitimate son of King Charles XIII of Sweden and who served as Swedish envoy to the Russian Imperial Court starting in 1811. He presumably purchased these commodes during one of his lengthy stays in St. Petersburg.
