Lot Essay

Julius Rappoport created many of Fabergé’s superbly modelled animal figures, many of which were made as functional objects, such as bell-pushes, table lighters, ewers and cups. The inspiration for these animals, which combine imagination with close observation of nature, came from a variety of sources, including European silver sculpture, Japanese netsuke and Far Eastern animal figures. The influence of the latter can be particularly seen in the present cup.
