The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas appears to be lined, and brown tape has been applied along all four edges. There are minor frame abrasions with associated paint losses to the extreme edges.
A prominent pattern of craquelure is visible overall, as evident in the photographs of the lot. In places the craquelure is slightly raised and is associated with minor paint losses. There is a surface scratch measuring approximately 1.5 cm. to the right of the model’s right elbow.
Inspection under UV light reveals several campaigns of restoration, most likely undertaken at different times. The most extensive areas of retouching include: a vertical line measuring approximately 16 cm. running from the headpiece to the sitter’s belt and encroaching onto the model’s face; an area to the centre of the right edge; and an extensive area running along the height of the figure on the left side. Further scattered areas of inpainting are present, particularly concentrated in the lower left quadrant.
The varnish has noticeably discoloured, and there is a substantial layer of surface dirt and accretions. There is also staining to the left of the sitter’s left glove.
