On four scrolled feet terminating in scrolled shells, with openwork aprons of flowers, foliage, and fantastical birds, the tapering body pierced with scrolls and with waves and rocaille shells, with four scrolled branches supporting shaped circular leafy drip-pans and vase-form sconces chased with overlapping leaves, all surmounted by a navette-form basket chased with waves and capped by acanthus, later applied with acanthus cartouches to either side, one engraved with a coat-of-arms, the other with a crest above a motto, gilt interior, marked on rim of base and flange of basket with Hibernia, Harp, and maker's marks, branches, drip-pans, and sconces apparently unmarked, the applied cartouches to the baskets with maker's mark unclear, London, 1838

The arms is that of Tennant of St. Rollox, Glasgow, probably for John Tennant (1796-1878) of St. Rollox, Glasgow. He inherited from his father on the latter’s death in 1838, the date of the later applied cartouches on this epergne. The family wealth was founded on the St. Rollox Chemical Works, which produced bleach and other alkali products. John and his son Sir Charles Tennant 1^stBt. (1823-1906) expanded the family’s interests into steel and copper, railways, explosives and banking. Sir Charles transformed the family merchant bank C. Tennant and Sons. Sir Charles’ eldest son Edward Priaulx Tennant, 2^ndBt. (1856-1920) was created 1st Baron Glenconner in 1911.
Another epergne by Robert Calderwood was sold in Le Grand Style, An Apartment on the Quai d'Orsay designed by Alberto Pinto at Christie's, Paris, 30 June 2022, lot 109 for €60,480.
