The snuff box with guilloché panels of lozenges within borders of scrolls, flowerheads, and foliage, the interior cover later engraved K.W. Ramler, marked in cover and base with maker's mark FS underneath a coronet, date letter E and wreath resembling Charge of Paris for 1762-1768, the flange with decharge mark, unclear; The toothpick case rounded rectangular, the cover and underside with scrolling foliage and flowerheads against a matte ground, with further borders of foliage and flowerhead to the sides, marked on interior cover and base with maker's mark and post-revolution second standard mark for gold probably 20.25 carat, 1798-1838, the flange with later control marks (bulldog and ram heads)

Karl Wilhelm Peter Ramler (1725-1798) was a German poet, translator, and literary theorist. Born in Kolberg (now Kołobrzeg, Poland), he studied theology at the University of Halle before moving to Berlin where he was appointed professor of logic and literature at the Cadet School in 1748. In 1790 Ramler resigned to serve as sole director of the Royal Theatre, a position he held for six years.
