The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This grand surtout is in very good condition, particularly considering fragility of material and age. With minor surface wear including faint scuffs and scratches. The mirror plates with foxing, some panels replaced. With some minor losses to the droplets and florettes, not extensive, and some replaced. The spherical glass droplets with some further small losses to the fitment, not readily visible when placed. The arched glass supports and cluster-column supports with some small cracks, some inherent to the making and stable. The glass drip pans with some scattered nicks and minute losses to the edges and around the central hole, consistent with use and age, some replaced. Some of the branches do not sit flush in the metal fitments, as some of the metal fitments are slightly out of round, but sit securely when fully assembled. The silvered metal with some rubbing and oxidation, and the flower liners with some oxidation and verdigris in areas. The 'S' form branches appear to be largely original, with some irregularity in the shape, a good indication of hand hewn glass. The reverse painted seals with some rubbing and small losses. The velvet surface later, with very faint surface wear. Of impressive size and scale and presents very well overall.
