Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas, which has been relined and is held under adequate tension. Examination in natural light reveals a network of craquelure across the surface of the painting, particularly visible in the lighter tones of the sky and ship sails. Some minor associated infill is present, which has since discoloured. In the craquelure along the top and lower edges some organic residue has formed, which would benefit from removal. Two small areas of flaking paint in the sky require consolidation. Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals minor further retouching in the sky and sea. An old varnish precludes further analysis. The majesty of the composition remains fully appreciable.
