A DIRECTOIRE ORMOLU, PATINATED-BRONZE AND VERDE ANTICO MARBLE STRIKING MANTEL CLOCK 'PENDULE À LA BACCHANTE'
This clock, after a model introduced in Paris in the 1780s, celebrates Love's triumph by evoking the 'Feast of Bacchus' with a reclining nymph raising a wine-tazza, on a vine-festooned palanquin borne by Cupid-driven and grape-eating bacchic goats. Other versions of this model are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.I, p.280, fig.4.13.1; and G. Wannenes, Le Pi Belle Pendole Francesi - Da Luigi XIV all'Impero, Milan, 1991, p. 89.
Related clocks were sold Christie's, London, 12 June 2003, lot 1072 and The P. C. Spaans Collection of Important Clocks, Christie's, Amsterdam, 19 December 2007, lot 471, (also with the unusual Roman and Arabic hour combination).

CASE: The ormolu and marble with chips, scratches and areas of tarnish as expected with age, most heavily affecting the palanquin and the Bacchus figure with hairline crack to torso. One right hand foot lacking. The green marble plinth with infill to repaired crack to with a large drill hole. The plinth with a drilled hole to the rear right -hand side and a, perhaps related, cut-out to the side of the barrel, purpose unknown. The whole covered in light layer of dirt, would benefit from light clean. DIAL: The enamel dial with a few light marks and with chips to the border, most noticeably to the right-hand winding hole and about the dial retaining screws, the dial pins appear to be broken as the dial is presently loose. A small chip to the top edge of the rear glass cover of the mechanism. MOVEMENT: The movement with later brocot regulation. The movement generally dirty and tarnished and would benefit from a clean and service. It has not been tested for duration or timekeeping. With calendar adjustment to the backplate, not currently working. Requires a pendulum and winding key. Please note Christie's do not guarantee the working condition, duration or timekeeping of clocks offered for sale. Further detailed images are available upon request from the department.
