The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas which has been relined, is held under adequate tension and remains stable.
In natural light, the painting presents well, with some minor discoloured retouching in the ground and sky. An old yellowed varnish covers the surface, which may benefit from removal. Some minor historic frame abrasion is visible along the upper and lower edges. Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals some retouching above the right-hand horse, as if in the position of a rider - this may have been a pentiment painted out by the artist. An area of retouching is present lower centre. The old varnish precludes further analysis.
