Lot Essay

Pierre Denizot, maître in 1740.
François Bayer maître in 1764.

This commode is highly comparable to that supplied by Bayer in 1771, through the fournisseur du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne Gilles Joubert, for the château de Compiègne. It was described in the Journal for 1 July: 'Joubert - Pour servir dans diffrents appartements au château de Compiègne... (Archives nationales, 01 3319, fol.62). The Compiègne commode was sold anonymously at Christie's Paris, 21 June 2006, lot 271. Further comparable commodes include that by Bayer sold Anonymous Sale; Christie's, 10th December 2009, lot 582. For similar mounts see Property of a Lady; Christie's, London, 5th July 2001, lot 105.
As the ébéniste Pierre Denizot received his maîtrise in 1740, his main patrons were the Comte D'Artois, and the Comte de Provence, younger brothers of Louis XVI, where he supplied furniture for the Royal palaces.
