The pyramidal-shaped case surmounted by a flower and fruit-filled urn, flanked to each side by a winged sphinx supporting a central wreath, the front panel depicting the The Sacrifice of Love, above a rectangular base inset with a partial frieze centred by a mask of Apollo, on scrolling acanthus-cast paw feet, the arched dial partly concealed behind the removable relief panel with two rotating blue enamel and gilt Roman hour and Arabic minute discs, the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and outside countwheel strike to bell, half of the mount to the front plinth lacking

Lot Essay

A clock of this model with a blue-enameled dial was sold by Ader, Paris in 1962 and was reproduced in Tardy La pendule française des origines à nos jour, II, 1975 (1949), p. 359, fig. 1. A closely related clock was offered at Bonham's, London, 9 July 2015, lot 46 (£12,500).
