A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED AND BRASS-INLAID AMARANTH AND EBONY COMMODE A VANTAUX
CIRCA 1780, REUSING A COMMODE ATTRIBUTED TO BOULLE FILS, CIRCA 1720
André-Charles Boulle made frequent use of this model of angle mount in his oeuvre. They appear on the series of bibliotheques basses, of which six are in the Louvre (D. Alcouffe, A. Dion-Tenenbaum and A. Lefébure, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, Dijon, 1993, nos. 28 & 29, pp. 98-100), as well as on the group of armoires basses mounted with figures of Aspasia and Philosophy. The celebrated pair of armoires from Fonthill and Hamilton Palace in the Louvre, which correspond to a drawing attributed to Boulle in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, also has these angles as well as similar (though not identical) masks suspending oak foliage (ibid., no. 21, pp. 84-86). On all these examples the angle mount is used vertically rather than horizontally, as on the Givenchy commode. The lockplate is also a standard Boulle model.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In fairly good restored condition overall. With inevitable knocks, marks, losses, scratches and shrinkage cracks, consistent with age and use. As stated in the printed catalogue and online, this commode has a circa 1715 carcass but adapted later in the 18th century, to include the drawers, feet and ormolu mounts. The marble top with some knocks and nibbling to the back edge, including three small chips. The front left hand edge of the marble top with a larger chip, approx. 1 in. length. Areas of restoration to the veneers throughout with some patched repairs and filled shrinkage cracks. The above restoration is most visible to the pair of doors which have vertical shrinkage cracks running through each door and with visible restoration to both. There is a slight variation to the colour of the timber to the doors. The drawer linings with some extensive shrinkage splits, which would benefit from securing. The ormolu mounts in good condition, probably regilt and very bright in tone. Otherwise structurally secure and ready to use.
